Mallorca Game 2015: Getting Better Every Year

Last year I wrote an article about the second edition of Mallorca Game, and this year was no exception. The dates for this edition — June 19, 20, and 21 — were strategically chosen by the organizers to maximize the event’s impact. They scheduled it just days after E3 in Los Angeles and shortly before Gamelab in Barcelona. This timing alone allowed industry leaders like Gabriel Ortas (producer of Planet51 and a programmer since Spain’s golden age of gaming) and Victor Ruiz (co-founder of FX Interactive and DEV board member) to visit our beloved island for the weekend.

Building a Balearic Game Development Ecosystem

The goal we set during the second Mallorca Game was primarily to create an ecosystem for the Balearic game industry. I believe we achieved that objective. Local developers, students, and enthusiasts came together to form a community that continues to grow. Furthermore, the event attracted attention from mainland Spain and international visitors who were curious about Mallorca’s emerging tech scene.

The third edition brought several improvements over previous years. The venue was better organized, the speaker lineup was stronger, and attendance increased noticeably. Additionally, the workshops and hands-on sessions gave participants practical skills they could apply immediately. Young developers especially benefited from the mentoring sessions with experienced professionals.

Highlights and Key Moments

Several talks stood out for their quality and relevance. Presentations covered topics ranging from game design and monetization to the business side of running an indie studio. Moreover, the networking opportunities were invaluable. Conversations that started during coffee breaks led to collaborations and partnerships that lasted well beyond the event itself.

The indie showcase was another highlight. Local studios demonstrated their projects to a supportive audience. This kind of exposure is critical for small teams working in relative isolation on an island. Receiving feedback from industry veterans and fellow developers helped them refine their games and business strategies.

Looking Ahead

Each year, Mallorca Game takes a step forward. The event has become a reference point for the Balearic tech community and a unique gathering in the Spanish gaming calendar. I am proud to have contributed to its growth from the beginning. Consequently, I look forward to seeing how the event continues to evolve and attract more talent to the island.

In summary, Mallorca Game 2015 proved that a dedicated community can build something meaningful even outside the major tech hubs. The combination of great speakers, passionate local developers, and a beautiful setting makes this event truly special. If you are interested in game development in Spain, Mallorca Game deserves a spot on your calendar.
