The video game industry has always been a pioneer in the online world in every sense. Subscription models emerged thanks to piracy in Asia. Freemium models and the sale of virtual goods appeared in MMOs. In-app purchases revolutionized mobile applications. Likewise, due to the rapid evolution of the sector and technology, the gaming industry also leads the way in future jobs and new roles.
Now, let us be frank. No schools, certifications, or universities currently train people for these future jobs. This is not due to a lack of knowledge. Instead, the digital world changes constantly at a speed that educational institutions cannot match. Ultimately, the most qualified people for the future roles I describe below are self-taught individuals. They are eager to try new things, quick to learn, and passionate about their work. In fact, large companies increasingly value these profiles, because formal education alone cannot keep pace with market demands.
Future Job 1: Head of Acquisition / User Acquisition Manager / Growth Hacker
How will you generate revenue without driving traffic to your site?
Regardless of their title, these professionals share the same goal: acquiring traffic as cheaply as possible. An online product, website, game, or mobile app needs traffic to generate income. Think of this role as a Marketing Director with the following additions:
- Deep knowledge of acquisition metrics such as LTV, ROI, CTR, CPI, CPL, CPA, and A/B Testing.
- Experience across diverse acquisition channels including viral marketing, Facebook Ads, Twitter Ads, SEO/SEM, mobile, cross-promotion, affiliates, PR, email marketing, and social media.
- Hands-on experience with acquisition tools and platforms like Google Ads, Facebook Business Manager, ad networks, and analytics dashboards.
- Strong analytical skills to measure campaign performance and optimize budgets accordingly.
As a result, these professionals combine marketing creativity with data-driven decision making. They constantly test new channels and strategies to find the most cost-effective acquisition methods.
Future Job 2: Data Analyst / Business Intelligence / Big Data Specialist
Like the previous role, the goal of these future jobs is to optimize the conversion funnel through data analysis. Every business, whether online or offline, has a conversion funnel. Depending on the model, it will be measured differently. The main function of these roles involves dissecting the conversion funnel to optimize every step by analyzing customer behavior. The key qualifications for this position include:
- Deep understanding of all business metrics such as 1-day retention, engagement, ARPU, ARPDAU, and more.
- Expert-level analytical and statistical skills including sampling, algorithms, A/B Testing, multidimensional tables, and Big Data.
- Proficiency with analysis tools, statistics software, and basic programming such as Matlab, SQL, and Excel.
- Ability to transform raw data into actionable insights that drive business decisions.
Therefore, data analysts serve as the backbone of any digital business. They translate numbers into strategies that improve user experience and boost revenue.
Future Job 3: CRM Manager / Community Manager / VIP Manager / Retention Manager
How will you get a customer who had a problem to pay again if you do not solve it?
Although we could define each of these roles separately, I prefer to group them under the same category. They all share the same objective: retaining the customer. Increasingly, thanks to the Internet, the cost of a product (whether a CD, a video game, or a movie) tends toward zero. As a consequence, the industry evolves from products to services. This shift is especially visible in gaming. Today, buying a physical video game at a store is rarer than buying extra lives to keep playing Candy Crush. This is where the CRM Manager becomes essential. Their role focuses on keeping users engaged and spending over time. The key qualifications include:
- Deep understanding of customer lifecycle management and retention metrics.
- Experience with CRM tools and customer segmentation strategies.
- Strong communication skills for community management and VIP player engagement.
- Ability to design loyalty programs and personalized offers that reduce churn.
In conclusion, these retention-focused roles prove just as important as acquisition roles. After all, retaining an existing customer costs far less than acquiring a new one. Companies that invest in these future jobs position themselves for sustainable long-term growth in the digital economy.
